Ever experience a flutter in your chest and feel a little lightheaded? It could be that you’re having cardiac arrhythmia, a condition wherein the heart beats too fast (tachycardia) or too slow (bradycardia).
Arrhythmia can be fatal when the heart beats too fast as this causes valves to not operate properly, cutting off blood supply to vital organs.
This can be caused by many lifestyle factors, including drinking too much caffeine, stress, drug abuse, and smoking. Certain health conditions can also lead to arrhythmia, such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, congenital heart disease, prior heart surgeries, blocked arteries and diabetes.
In Western Medicine there are many options for restoring the heart’s regular pattern including defibrillation and synchronized electrical cardioversion. For Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners, the use of acupuncture has delivered very positive results in returning the heart to a healthy rhythm.
Beijing University researchers analysed existing research data, taken from nine medical databases to evaluate how effective acupuncture is at treating arrthymia. The team found 9 studies for their analysis that included 638 patients in total.
The results, published in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine, show that the effects of acupuncture had a beneficial effect on a person’s heart.
Researchers concluded that “CA [conventional acupuncture] may be a useful and safe alternative or additive approach to AADs [anti-arrhythmia drugs] for cardiac arrhythmia, especially in VPB [ventricular premature beat] and Af [atrial fibrillation] patients, which mainly based on a pooled estimate and result from 1 study with higher methodological quality.” They note that additional studies are required to confirm the results in order to produce a more “robust conclusion.”
A dysfunction in the heart can reveal many other symptoms including shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, and/or fainting. Arrhythmia can also cause a slight anxiety, inability to sleep, timid emotions and a weaker physiology all around. If you are experiencing some of these signs, come in to our clinic for a consultation.
